Founded by a single mom in a two bedroom apartment, Michelle started The Atypical Co., with a simple sewing machine and a desire to create a company that embodies three important tenets: environmentalism, family, and community.
By creating solutions from repurposed materials, we are able to reduce non-biodegradable waste not only in our landfills, but also in our streets, waterways, and across communities. We aim to use as many repurposed materials as possible in all our products, and it is our sincerest hope that by reducing waste, we are able to create a sustainable world for future generations.
This company would not exist without the love and support of family. My parents, sisters, cousins, and aunts champion, test, critique, and most importantly, use all of our repurposed solutions. I continue to build this business for my son, and dream that one day, he is able to use the skills he has learned along the way to build something of his own.
The Atypical Co. passionately supports women and people of color in our community. We’ve partnered with the Wichita Women’s Initiative Network to assist with our manufacturing process. This organization provides women survivors of domestic abuse with the necessary job readiness skills and emotional support to become self-sufficient. In the coming years, we plan to expand our global footprint and will begin steps to open a manufacturing company in the Philippines in an effort to provide viable employment for low income and poor families.
With every purchase made, you are supporting a small business with big dreams to improve our world, and we thank you!
